As this month’s outstanding guest speakers conclude, IRMA would like to take a moment to recognize the vital education they provided to our students. Their insights and expertise have improved our program, promoting a deeper understanding of the industry and inspiring our future professionals. We are grateful for their contributions and look forward to continued learning and engagement.
Philip Renaud, the Risk Management Consultant with Blue Sky Management, highlighted the crucial themes of critical thinking and resiliency in the dynamic changing of risk management. He emphasized that resilient companies are better to navigate challenges and excel under unpredictability. Phil also encouraged the students to have creativity in their problem-solving approach as they develop their skills as future risk management professionals.
Ryan Binau, a Regional Vice President at Encova Insurance, shared critical insights on the view of personal lines insurance, addressed the latest trends, challenges, and anticipated changes in the market. His presentation sparked engaging discussions among the students and revealed the many different opportunities that personal lines have to offer.
Student Highlight:
Cole Sherburne, a junior and 2nd year in the program, shares how IRMA has assisted in his growth in the industry.
Throughout his time in the program, Cole Sherburne shares how his knowledge of the insurance and risk management industry has grown tremendously. From learning the basics of insurance to hearing from industry professionals about their experiences, Sherburne states that “this program has allowed me to see the importance of the insurance industry and the opportunities that are available within it.”
Another unique experience Sherburne describes is how the IRMA program provides students with the opportunity to meet with industry leaders who are always willing to share their time and expertise with us. The chance to build connections and network with these individuals is a special opportunity that IRMA students are provided with.
Sherburne reflects on how IRMA is progressing, bringing in the largest class of new students this year. He is leading the charge of Gamma Iota Sigma (GIS), an insurance based fraternity, extending the reach of the industry to more students on campus. “Our goal with GIS is to give students interested in the industry the opportunity to network and learn from professionals in the industry.”
Student Perspective:

Ruth Kamanga reflects on her journey and insights as a political science major in the IRMA program:
What could one industry run on risk and finance have in common with another riddled with policymaking, as well as national and local administration?
Lets begin with one of the misconceptions I have discovered so far: Insurance is nothing more than premiums, claims, and paperwork
There is a common misbelief that insurance and risk management exist in a vacuum. It can feel like it is its own silo and appear as less pervasive than fields like political science that visibly impact daily life. However, RMI has a deeper role than we may think. Whether its protecting homes from disasters, businesses from risk, or you and I from the unpredictable situations life throws at us, it is sewn into communities, weaving a safety net that facilitates the smooth running of society. Much is the same of policy making, as it is aimed at allowing for smooth function in society.
Keep an eye out for next month’s newsletter, where Ruth will continue to provide insights and debunk more insurance myths.
